Re: [Po4a-devel][CVS] po4a/doc po4a.7.pod,1.21,1.22
by Martin Quinson
Yeah, I just updated the documentation. It's getting rather long and
complete now. Could you guys read it and report error/omissions ?
Then, I guess we should translate it. For example, I'm trying to get one
debian package converted, but the spanish translator is not sure he wants
his abits changed. It would be just really cool if you could get this to
spanish, Jordi. I know that's a lot of work, and I'd understand if you say
no. After all, it's not even in french ;)
Thanks, Mt.

It worries me however, to realize how tough an ass-hole I have had to be, in order
to get to stick to the principle of doing things right, rather than
"just hack it in".

[Po4a-devel][CVS] po4a/doc po4a.7.pod,1.21,1.22
by Martin Quinson
Update of /cvsroot/po4a/po4a/doc
In directory haydn:/tmp/cvs-serv19016
Modified Files:
po4a.7.pod
Log Message:
Major overhaul. Some parts were almost new rewritten.
I can give some gettextization tips, now that I tested it in real conditions.
The argument about "why po4a" was shorten a bit. The tool gets better, there is
less discusion about with it could be cool.
Addendum, the examples come before, showing that it's not that difficult.

po4a - framework to translate documentation and other material

The po4a (po for anything) project goal is to ease translations (and more
interestingly, the maintenance of translations) using gettext tools on areas
where they were not expected like documentation.

+The biggest issue (beside missing modules) is the encoding handling. Adding
+a UTF8 perl pragma and then recoding the strings on output is the way to go,
+but it's not done yet.
-To do the same, we should allow translators to put their addendum in the po
-file itself, as comment.
+We would also like to factorise some code (about file insertion) of the sgml
+module back into the TransTractor so that all module can benefit of this,
+but this is not user visible.

Hi there,
This paragraph appears on every piece of documentation. My feeling is
that this is not plain English, so I rewrote it into something like:
The po4a (po for anything) project goal is to ease translations (and
more interestingly, the maintenance of translations) using gettext
tools on areas where they were not expected like documentation.
Other people made other fixes, so there are now 4 slightly different
paragraphs in po/pod/po4a-pod.pot, it would be nice if someone fluent in
English could propose a better wording so that all instances get fixed.

IIRC Encode is now the standard way. About XML attributes, I read
posts from Daniel Veillard telling that good DTDs should never make
attributes translatable in XML, human readable data have to appear in
tag's body. Unfortunately I have no pointer, but this made sense to me.
