Thank you Denis for cc'ing me :)
It looks like msgmerge used to split words containing non-alphanumeric
characters, but now prefers not splitting. This is just a wild guess,
this should be confirmed by testing.
Sorry it took a while to reply but I wanted to do some testing before.
It seems that the workaround of installing gettext from
wheezy-backports works fairly well, so problem solved on our side.
