Hi!
I am currently evaluating po4a and I stumbled into some observations, which
someone here can possibly explain. I am running 0.28 on FreeBSD
1. Whatever po4a command I try, I always get 2 warnings, example:
#/usr/local/bin/po4a-gettextize -f sgml -m ./testproj.xml -p ./testproj.pot
Use of uninitialized value in hash element
at /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/Locale/Po4a/Sgml.pm line 668.
po4a::sgml: Warning: nsgmls is missing or non-functional. Please make sure
that
nsgmls is present and does not produce any error (with the
-wno-valid option), and report a bug otherwise. Continuing...

testproj.xml which is including test_chapter.xml. If I look at the

The first question here is, why this should be translated. The second, more
important is, why this ends with a double "larger than". The source code was:
<mediaobject><imageobject><imagedata fileref="apicture.png"
format="PNG"/>
</imageobject></mediaobject>
3. Looking into the same line I notice, that the line number
#: ./testproj.xml:41
is also wrong. It should be
#: ./testproj.xml:45 ./test_chapter.xml:6
as this fragment was from test_chapter.xml
4. If I now translate, lets say
# type: <author></author>
#: testproj.xml:14
msgid "<firstname>J.T.</firstname>
<surname>Kirk</surname>"
msgstr "<firstname>J.T.</firstname> <surname
Kirk</surname>"
(note the missing greater than after surname), po4a-translate creates an
invalid xml file. This is off cource not po4a's fault, but the question here
is, if po4a could not make an xml validity check on each translated item and
print a warning, pointing to the wrongly translated string

I'm sorry about these warnings. The point is that I can't detect wether
nsgmls detected errors. The return value of nsgmls seems to always be
non-zero nowadays. I should just remove this warning and recommend to
check the validity of the file.

again but with the same result. Most entries from test_chapter.xml were listed
as
#: ./testproj.xml:41
Some from the end of test_chapter.xml as
#: ./testproj.xml:45 ./test_chapter.xml:11
to
#: ./testproj.xml:45 ./test_chapter.xml:30
I have appended my .pot file as reference. It might help, that I am using
nsgmls from jade:

/usr/local/bin/nsgmls was installed by package jade-1.2.1_9
My po4a installation is not from the FreeBSD ports (it has not been updated
since 0.23) but from a patched port (where I bumped the version number).

Whatever you plan to do here, it should work on the .po file entry level! In
other words it should say: "your translation of ....
in ./testproj.xml:45 ./test_chapter.xml:30 is wrong, as it breaks the xml
syntax or semantic rules". It does not help if it states during
po4a-translate, that the result xml files has an unterminated <whatever> tag.
Finding the wrong translation in the .po will probably last forever!

I think nsgmls is troubled by the XML file it receives.
<imagedata fileref="apicture.png" format="png"/>
is, according to the output of nsgmls, equivalent to
<imagedata fileref="apicture.png" format="png">>
(i.e. '/' closes the tag, and the remaining '>' is just an additionnal
character)
This is of course not the case in a XML file (but here, it is interpreted
as an SGML file).
I will try to support it anyway since I would like this module to be able
to deal with XML also (but I've not been successful in doing this this
afternoon). Maybe I could support it with an option.

The line references are not perfect, but it seems they are better now.
I can't tell you wether it due to my version of nsgmls (1.3.4-1.2.1-47)
or po4a (0.28)
I'm joining the POT file generated on my system.
The line references are just helpers.
There could be some improvements: here testproj.xml:45 could be removed
(it is the reference of the line where the test_chapter.xml file is
included). Also the line numbers are not always exact.

I did not check the latest po4a, but in version 0.16.2, afaics, nsgmls
returns 1 because the data po4a gives it is not valid Sgml code. The
problem comes from the {PO4A-beg-xxx} items that Sgml.pm inserts to deal
with the conditional inclusion mechanism.
So I guess one way to avoid it would be to not use conditional inclusion
in the original document but that's quite restrictive.

Adding {PO4A-beg-xxx} is not really an issue. The problem is that the
resulting file may have multiple closing tag for one opening tag (or tags
may appear where the DTD doe not allow it).
Something like:
<para>
<![ %i386 [
blah</para>
]]>
<![ %amd64 [
blahblah</para>
]]>
Is converted to:
<para>
{PO4A-beg-i386}
blah</para>
{PO4A-end}
{PO4A-beg-amd64}
blahblah</para>
{PO4A-end}
But then, the <para> tag is closed twice.
So I guess one way to avoid it would be to not use conditional
inclusion
in the original document but that's quite restrictive.
In the case of Heiner's file, there are no conditional inclusions. The
problem is that it is an XML file, and is not considered as valid by
nsgmls.
I still hope I will be able to have a better support (with the warning) of
XML files with the SGML module (I think it is better than the XML module).

Heiner, can you try the docbook module? (it's a specialization of the XML
module for the docbook DTD).
