From what I read, you are using the XMl module directly, isn't it?
Did you try the Docbook module. It should provide what you are looking
for. (block split at the right place, abstraction of the wrapping
locations, ...)
If you are already using such module, can you send an example file and the
command line you are using.
(What you are asking for is perfectly valid, and should already be the
case).
